Question:

Hi Glass Detective,

I have a large three-door antique bookcase with glass panels in each door. I am concerned that my grand kids could be injured if they were to break the glass. What are your recommendations for replacement glass for an antique bookcase?

Thanks, Charles

Answer:

Dear Charles,

I appreciate your concerns for your grandchildren’s safety. I have nine of my own. The glass in your cabinet could be replaced with either tempered safety glass or laminated safety glass. If you have any problem finding a source for this, re-contact us and we can recommend a reputable glass shop to you for bookcase replacement glass.

Thanks for contacting the Glass Detective.

  1. A missing glass in a Lundstrom (pre 1925) bookcase leaves a gap about 1/8 inch. Does the requirement for either tempered or laminated safety glass mean a thickness larger than 1/8 inch?
Glass was held in by wood strips attached with tiny finishing nails.
Assuming I keep any grandchildren out of the room, is it possible to get someone to replace the glass?
Other Lundstrom bookcase parts I have include the bottom shelf glass, which is 13 inches wide instead of the 11 inches I need to replace. Can this be cut down to fit?

    1. Hi Martha,

1/8″ thickness is generally the thinnest glass that is readily available. Most pieces of glass can be cut to fit. Take it to a local, skilled glass shop that offers this service and they should be able to assist.
